ARTIST VOICE

As an Estonian painter and video artist of Russian origin, I explore my own identity through my work and deal with the problems of Russian ethnicity in Estonia today. In my work, I have focused on themes such as my experience and that of other native Russian speakers in a politically tense time, the linguistic barrier, assimilation and loneliness, and many other complex feelings related to national identity.

I use a limited palette of colors to allude to the serious moods associated with the issues at hand. For example, the chosen color blue can symbolize loneliness, the need for love, and sadness. The intertwining of figurative and abstract motifs also plays an important role in my art, helping to create a sense of dynamic movement or depict the opposite static condition.

Interview-based creative research has also become an important part of my work, which I find expression in video art. The aim is to explore and present other people's experiences of identity issues. My work is about the search for ways to convey specific feelings, to create a sense of identification and a more personal connection with the audience.
